Sales tax, state by state
There is no federal sales tax in the US. States, counties and cities each set their own rates, and some items (groceries, clothing under a threshold in some places) are taxed differently. SmartPOS stores as many tax rates as you need and combines them into tax groups, so a single item can carry state plus local tax, and an exempt item can carry none. You enter the rates for your address; we do not file or remit sales tax for you.

Card and wallet payments go through your own processor. SNAP/EBT needs a certified processor and your store's own FNS authorisation.

01Are US prices shown with or without sales tax?
Without. US prices on this site exclude sales tax, which is added at checkout where it applies, as is normal in the US.

02Does SmartPOS work with my card processor?
SmartPOS works with your own card processor and records each card payment against the sale. Ask on your demo which processors and readers we have set up for your trade.

03Can I take SNAP/EBT?
Yes, through a certified payment processor that handles SNAP/EBT, once your store has FNS authorisation. The EBT transaction is processed by that processor.

04Can it handle different tax rates for different items?
Yes. Create each rate, combine them into tax groups, and assign the right group to each product, including zero-rated items.

05Is there a Spanish version?
Yes. The software interface and receipts can run in Spanish, and this site has Spanish home, pricing and contact pages.

06What are your US support hours?
Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm Eastern, closed on federal holidays. Messages after hours are answered the next business morning.
